ABOUT THE CANADIAN FOOD SAFETY INSTITUTE
The CFSI Food Safety Certification Competency Program is a standardized qualification and certification program initiated by former Food Safety Auditor of the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) and Auditor members of the ASQ Food, Drug & Cosmetic division led by the former Canadian Regional Councilor. Our goal is the standardization of the qualifications of food industry professionals, establishment of food safety competency levels to that of the CFSI Certification Criteria for Food Safety Auditors in Canada and increase the number of Food Safety Auditors in Canada.
The institute is a not-for-profit, non-government organization responding to national, provincial and regional food safety risk challenges through the delivery of training and certification of Food Safety Auditors, Specialists, Technicians and Consultants. The institute also issue a Food Safety Compliance Recognition Training Certificate to government-licensed restaurants and food service businesses after the owner or their employees have taken and pass the Food Safety Level 1 Course (as a step up to the government mandated Food Handling Certificate). The program has been carefully developed based on:
i) CGSB's criteria for the selection of Food Safety Auditors in Canada ii) various national, regional, provincial and internationally-recognized standards including Codex Alimentarius, HACCP, CGSB’s HACCP Advantage, CFIA’s FSEP, FQS, ISO 22000, Global Food Safety Initiatives Standard (GFSIS), among others.
CFSI have also developed other food safety certification training programs such as Food Service Specialist, Retail Food HAACP Specialist, Organic Safety Auditor, Specialist and Consultant training programs in response to demand in the food industry.

In the last six months, some of our students and graduates have been employed by various food companies across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The requirements for completing the program are divided into three steps:
Step 1: Applicants must take and pass the Program Entry Food Safety Level1 Course
Step 2: Students must take and pass the eight core program courses (six required and 2 recommended)
Step 3: Complete the 200 hours or five-week on-site competency assessment or Field Placement/Internship in a food establishment including the completion of an Internal Test audit based on ISO 22000:2005 for food sectors.
Graduates of the Program
Most of our graduates are university graduates with Master’s and Ph.D. in Food Science, Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Soil Biology and Chemistry, Food Quality Assurance levels, and Basic Sciences. Some have completed college programs in Food Science, Culinary Arts, Cooking, Wine-making and related fields.
They have completed both the eight (8) required and recommended courses and pass the final examination at 70% or higher and are applying their knowledge in food production, processing, packaging, storage, transportation and labelling facilities. They are awarded the professional titles of Food Safety Specialist Level1 Food Safety Auditors, Level 1 and Food Safety Technician, Level 1 Graduate.
Most of our Field Placement Graduates have completed on-line studies and classroom sessions, pass the final exam and completed the pre-onsite placement/internship session.

Qualification for Entry to Program
i) All students taken CFSI programs must be proficient in English Language (at TOEFL standard)
ii) Bachelor, Masters or Doctorate in Food Science, Agriculture, Environmental Science,
Biology, Botany, Animal Science, Dietetics, Nutrition, Food Technology, Food Manufacturing, Vetenary Science, Pharmaceutical Science and related fields in Canada
iii) College Diploma in Food Technology, Culinary Arts, Chef, Pharmaceutical Science, etc. in Canada
iv) More than 3 years continuous Work experience in the Food Industry in Canada
v) Internationally-trained Food, Science, Agriculture or Vetenary Science professionals whose credentials have been approved by a Canadian Credentialing body and at approved proficiency level on TOEFL
Program Format and Options

Scope of Program.
All students must take and pass the first Prerequisite Food Safety Level 1 Course at 70% or above before approval for the core certification program. The core program consists of 8 course modules and assignments. Students are required to take the program one course module at a time. After passing the final exam at 70% or above, students must complete and pass the required 5 weeks (200 hours) on-site competency or Job Placement/Internship hours (unpaid). Successful students are then awarded the Full Food Safely Auditor, Specialist or Technician I professional title.

Maximum time to complete a course including assignment in 14 days
Maximum time to compelete a program including assignments in calendar 12 months

What about employment after completing the course or program?
CFSI does not promise or guarantee Job or Job Placement to students or graduates. The internet and employment resources are available to job seekers.
Provisional Qualifying Examination*
Who is qualified to write our Provisional Qualifying Exam?
CFSI Provisional Exam are reserved for those with minimum of five (5) years in management position in food facilities, food organizations or food regulations and approved for exemptions from the core program.

Provisional Exam Fee is $1,500.00 plus applicable taxes
Second Try Fee: $750.00 plus applicable taxes
Note: CFSI will recommend taking the full program if applicants fail Provisional Qualifying Exam after the second try.
